Chine Colle' was not a term I had heard before so I was intrigued to learn more. After chatting with my tutor I looked online for sources of information, watching the above videos to learn how the technique is used with the different types of printmaking and learning where it originated from.
I discovered that 'Chine' means China, where the papers originate. They also come from Japan and India. The papers are usually handmade and thin using a variety of colours and materials to give them a unique look.
'Colle' is a French word that means to glue. I had used collage in my work a lot in the past and so I was excited to try this with the lovely papers and my own prints. I chose a selection of colours and textures to get me started.
Wanting to see how this technique worked in other printmaker's work I did some further research on Pinterest and Instagram shown above and below.
Artists who use Chine Colle':

Whilst searching Instagram for printmaker's who use Chine Colle' in their work I came across Danielle Creenaune from Australia. I was instantly drawn to her work because of her abstract, nature theme using minimal marks and textures to create a scene that the viewer instantly feels part of. I had to zoom right in to try to see where in the images Chine Colle' was used and it is fascinating that it is so subtle but gives so much depth to the image. Creenaune's prints inspire me because I see similarities in our work. I am drawn to minimal, soft abstract, landscapes, soft colours with added starkness of line and pattern to give depth and form. These techniques for me have developed over time and I found myself using them most in part 4 Collagpraphs.
I found these videos on Creenaune's website and found them so inspiring, the sounds of nature, her studio and her process were fascinating.

I had to dig deep to find artists using this technique that I was truly inspired by. I used Google and found Mari French's blog which then led me to her website, where I discovered more about her. Mari French is a contemporary artist who actually lives in the same region as me and enjoys a variety of art mediums. Also an abstract artist I instantly felt a connection to her. I found more detail about her Chine Colle' work on her blog. There are some fascinating images containing layering of ink and papers mixed with textures. I love the balance of all of these elements and the deep blue French has used to tie it all together. What drew me to French's work I think were the subtle textures, you can see brush like marks in the top right corner of this piece and as you look closer you see more detailed patterns within the other elements. This ties with my fascination of looking deeper at things in life and seeing the beauty that most people don't notice. It's like looking through a lens, deep down and discovering such wonders and beauty that is almost like a secret because no one else is seeing what you see.
